This post is for you Anthropologie. It’s no secret I love Anthropologie, many moons ago I worked there. I had the delightful job of sitting back in a small room by myself for most of the day and hot gluing literally one thousand (or more) round paper gold discs to bird wire that had been paper mached by myself the day before (oh and the discs cut by myself the day before that with one of those handy large paper punch tools). Not large enough or strong enough, I can promise you that because ten hours later…… still punching. Display coordinator is not the most glamorous job, it might be one of the most highly coveted for those starting out in the art world but glamor, no.
The truth, most of these jobs aren’t but there were many people I worked with there that made my days bright. For instance Dirk, we would look through fashion magazines together and laugh, he has the world’s best sense of humor (that was a highlight). He would pop his head in the back art room and tell me about a good CD (yes, CD you heard me right) to listen too. Or Jenny who was always smiling, happy and gave me sincere compliments. There were a lot of great people at this place (and not so great) but let’s focus on the good, shall we?
At this job, I consumed copious amounts of caffeine and chocolate. There happened to be a Rocky Mountain Chocolate factory next door and I would always get a little bag of chocolate covered Oreos. So when I am diagnosed with cancer, I blame this job 100%. Caffeine, chocolate, toxic fumes, low social contact, high stress, you get my point (I hope). To get me through say the eight hundred books I had to drill together by myself in the back room. I remember when I decided I needed to leave this job I wanted to go to design school in New York. My two bosses sat me down and told me not to go to New York. That is was expensive and crowded there and I would never get my job back as display coordinator. Can I say I am so grateful I didn’t heed their advice? I could still be back in that room losing my mind.
My point is follow your heart. People will give you all types of advice in life but at then end of your day touch base with your soul. You know what is best for you. Moving to New York was the best thing that ever happened to me. I am so glad I followed my heart and not my head. Sometimes things just have a way of working out. Trust the process. And to those of my friends still working at anthro, I am a little jealous of your discount and remember you weren’t the one doing the heaving gluing in the back room by yourself (that’s why your still there, you have the job that has your mental health in mind.)
Ok favorite things at Anthropologie (and urban their sister company). I love this dress with these shoes. This necklace I have for each of my kids, long story, let’s just say that wasn’t the original plan, but August was getting a lot of attention. Turns out my other kids need just as much or even more attention. So I have an A, H, and a G. I love this maxi dress with you could sport it with any sneakers really but I love these. And this candle is my all time favorite, no other candle wins, I am sorry, this is the winner. Really, though, if you have one you love too let me know! I am always open to new candles. (sort of). haha.
